Actually, in Spain we have had those for centuries and they are served as a take away in paper cones (not newspaper). They are called "freidurias" and they are extremely popular with locals and foreigners particularly on coastal towns, although Seville has some of the oldest and best known ones. They sell not only fried fish, generally cod or hake, but all kinds of seafood and other specialty deep fried dishes such as "croquetas" and "tortillas de camarones". Sorry, I haven't been able to find a page in English, but the photos will give you a good idea. Also, if you Google "freidurias images" you will find an appetizing display. http://www.loquemegustadetriana.com/freiduria.php
Oh... And they do use olive oil for deep frying. No malt vinegar, but plenty of lemon juice if you wish.

Thanks Geo, Paolo Nutini I can manage, and possibly the chips in small portions, but you can keep the fish.... Strange enough I think I may well have been in the fish and chip shop in Paisley that the Nutini family have, then again there are loads of Italians living there from the war...

Re: fish n' chips
There is a fish and chippy in Catania which even serves them in newspaper - very popular with the students.

Here is the full story about the lovely town of Barga and its Scottish connection. We always go there for coffee and ice cream but have never been at the fish and chips festival http://www.wantedinrome.com/news/2001427/a-wee-scots-corner-of-tuscany.html
