Italian Films
First topic message reminder :
We don't seem to have a category for films, Nor do I often see much discussion of Italian cinema on the net, and yet it seems to me that the Italians produce a fair amount of films every year. I do try and see films in Italian if I can in order to improve my language skills but I often find Italian films a bit so so for some reason. The classics (La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Bicycle Thieves etc.) are mostly pretty depressing and more modern ones, e.g. My Brother was an Only Child, are okay but not very inspiring or moving.
Recently however, I've seen two films that impressed me a lot. The first we saw in the cinema here in London, The Great Beautyl (La Grande Bellezza) and the other one, Mine Vaganti (Loose Cannons) I watched on DVD. Has anyone seen these? I'd heartly recommend both.

Re: Italian Films
i.e. his company funded the production.
We saw an interesting Sherlock Holmes film (in english) the other night on one of the fringe channels that was exec produced by Berlusconi. Christopher Lee as Sherlock, I think. I haven't watched it yet. I just recorded it for future viewing.

Actually, Berlusconi was the producer for "Mediterraneo".

Re: Italian Films
Actually, I only said it because I have a sneaking respect for him - probably the wrong word.
He's still very popular in Italy probably on the basis that we know he's a rogue, but he's our rogue.
I also firmly believe that much of the international disrespect he engenders is based on the generally bien-pensant, metrosexual left wing mainstream media in the west.
I think that he's probably not the only, or worst, rogue in the set.
Basically, I guess I mean "my enemy's enemy is my friend"

Re: Italian Films
Perhaps it would be better to have this discussion in the Politics section (there are also a couple of threads on Berlusconi in that same section or you can always start a new thread). My worry is that if we start discussing "il Cavaliere" in this thread about Italian films it may destroy it and it is a very interesting topic that could still get some wortwhile posts. Just an idea...
