crickets or cicadas?
Can anyone tell me whether I am listening to cicadas or crickets in my trees in the Colli Albani. I have once seen a huge cricket in a tree here and was familiar with crickets in Malta and Cyprus so just assumed they are crickets. Have googled the sound as well and it sounds between the two. Quite deafening (noisy in Rome at the moment too) during the day and at night but I just can't see them so am beginning to think they could be cicadas.

Re: crickets or cicadas?
Without doubt it will be Cicadas in the trees, we have many here at the moment making a lot of noise (lovely) and have seen a number, one I should add amazed me as it landed on the OH tummy... Very hard to see in trees (someone once told me impossible, but that's not true), but occasionally you here one on an open phone or electric pole and they are much easier to see... It can be a bit of a problem in areas where you also have grass about as the crickets (and/or grasshoppers) or even locust also make a lot of noise.... Not sure of their description, but this link describes their sounds... Link

Re: crickets or cicadas?
Cicadas abound everywhere at this time of year and the little darlings are at it all day long, they crawl up trees and the noise is made by a part of their abdomen contracting back and forth, not by rubbing wings together.
I have a picture of one at the bottom of our garden, but not sure if I can upload it.

thanks to everyone - sure they are cicadas now and have recorded the sound. My son was once given a toy one in a box which sounded when you lifted the lid but the pictures on the internet are nothing like as cute. I think I may have seen them around but thought 'just another bug'!
