Berlo Guilty (again!)
So Berlo has been found guilty of having sex with an underage prostitute and abusing the power of his office.
He's been sentenced to 7 years in jail and banned from holding public office........pending appeal (naturally!).
I wonder how he's going to get out of this one

Patience, procrastination and the best lawyers several billion Euros can buy! :roll:Oh yes, and an overstretched legal system that will allow him to time out the statute of limitations .......... again!

Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
Bet he has just sacked his last legal team and is hoping his appeal is held by a panel of male judges. who attended his parties. Hope not.
Perhaps, he will claim his human rights have been violated.

Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
Technically it's he's been found guilty of ''Paying for Sex with a Minor (under18)'' not having sex, which he has always denied. But as the statutes of limitation will probabaly be near when all the appeals have been exhausted and there is something about a Septuagenarian not having to go to Jail, the best we can hope for is he is banned from all public offices; which Grillo is pushing for as the Mediaset fiasco keeps running.

Unfortunately Gala, time runs out very quickly with the archaic legal system here, so we will still see his beaming face when the appeals run over.Gala Placidia wrote:Looks as if this time he is in real trouble. Only time will tell...
Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
It is as well to remember that the prosecution asked for six years - five for using his influence to get Ruby off a police charge, and only one year for screwing her. The three female judges upped the sentence to seven years - dunno which charge they added the extra year onto.
This is the sort of stuff which makes Silvio's appeal (just the first of three appeals to which he is entitled) insanely likely to succeed.

Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
To be fair to the old goat - I wouldnt have found him guilty of prostituzione minorile. Ruby seems incapable of telling the truth and if she said she was 21, she certainly looked it, and there is no reason to disbelieve her. I think there was reasonable doubt, although prostitute she patently was. The concussione side is more serious, and deserved the punishment - and Berlo to my mind is as guilty as hell of concussione, to save his own skin. None of this excuses a politically motivated judiciary, who are their own worst enemy when it comes to sentencing. How can you possible give a heavier sentence than that asked for by the prosecution? Will he be now put in the sex offenders register as a paedophile?
Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
Yes, the sentence has been a surprise, even for Berlusconi. I would have enjoyed being a judge. Fifteen years minimum!
P.S. Whether or not Ruby was already a prostitute, she was a MINOR. And I think that this is why The judges condemned him. The spirit of the law is to protect minors, even against their will. And a politician cannot break this rule. I should say a "decent" politician. Now, I woner what the 9,000,000 Italians who voted for him are thinking...

Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
Ruby wasn't a minor. She was, at the time, of an age where having sex is perfectly legal: it is just that she was a year too young for it to be legal to pay her for having sex.
So it is incorrect to refer to Silvio as a paedophile (at least, on the basis of his relationship with Ruby).

Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
Sorry, but I never used the word paedophile, because we are talking about a girl who was over the age of 11 at the time. So it was never the case. Ruby was even above the age of consent, which is around 16 in Italy, with exceptions if the partner was 3 years older or less, and in that case it could be as low as 14. On the other hand, even in the case of being 16 (or 17 as in the case of Ruby) if the person was older and could influence the minor because of his/her position (a politician, a priest, someone who should know better... as in this case. And Ruby, according to the Italian law was a MINOR at the time. A premier, quite a few decades older (and possibly wiser) had no excuse for paying a prostitute who was under age. He should have known better.

Re: Berlo Guilty (again!)
My question was rhetorical and a bit ironic seeing that Italy doesnt have a sex offenders register... but I will avoid using the p word too
